Athistulya , or obesity, is described in our ancient texts as a metabolic disorder in which fat tissue (meda) increases at the cost of depriving other essential tissues (dhatu) of energy. It is considered dangerous, its complications potentially fatal. Combining modern findings with their own clinical experience, the authors Dr Ishrat Syed & Dr Kalpana Swaminathan break down the science of food and fat with everyday analogies and anecdotes, taking us on a lyrical journey through the body, explaining all we ever wanted to know about fat, and then some! While the book starts off well, one quickly loses the plot in a maze of metaphors, medical terminology, and Shashi-Tharooresque verbosity. That said, the doctor-authors make many very valid and helpful observations about how our bodies function, within the Indian culture and context, our nutritional delusion compounded over the years, and the necessity to shift to a healthier diet. Some interesting take outs from the book:...

Bajra, jowar,   sama, varagu,   ragi –  some of these traditional millet names are already familiar to you. Many of you have eaten dishes cooked with them without knowing the different types and names of millet. So what brings on disease and is also the dominant cause of death? Why Health via Food is better than Health Fads Avoid excessively refined and purified food: Rice, for example, is a time tested cereal for at least 15 thousand years . But its refinement and devitalization by extraction of most of its nutrients through polishing lead to easy digestion and flooding of sugar into our blood, culminating in blood sugar disorders. Refining whole wheat strips it of its natural layers of bran and germ, reducing its nutritional value simply to improve its appearance and prolong shelf life. What’s more, the dieta...

These include high protein foods created in labs; products infused with probiotics; ‘new ‘ finds like coconut oil and ghee are being incorporated into all kinds of foods, including chocolates; and of course, fusion meals that are visual delights are in – for the gram! Many of these choices are dictated by their presumed benefits For example, people are focusing on high protein foods for the brain; probiotics is in the limelight for its digestive properties, as gut health and digestion is becoming a cause for concern; and oils like coconut and ghee bring with it the promise of beauty, smoother, clearer skin and so on. Eating local  is becoming fashionable too. Let me rephrase that. It is  ancient traditional food  that is in the spotlight, but the irony is that the further off it trav...
